The standard gaylord is 48" x 40" x 36", sized to sit on a GMA pallet. Full-height boxes run 48" x 40" x 48", half-height 48" x 40" x 24", and square boxes 48" x 48" x 36".

It depends on wall count and board grade: 2-wall roughly 500 to 1,800 lbs, 3-wall 1,200 to 3,000 lbs, 4-wall 2,000 lbs and up, and 5-wall 2,500 lbs and up; the manufacturer's certificate for the specific box is the controlling number. The wall count appears in a listing's title or specifications when the seller states it; if it is missing, ask before assuming a rating above 2-wall.

New boxes have never been used. Like-new boxes were used once and have no tears, crushing, or water marks. Used boxes show wear but are structurally sound; compression and moisture lower capacity, so rate a used box by the manufacturer's certificate for that box, not by the wall-count maximum. Fair boxes have significant wear and are best for light, dry, one-way use under 500 lbs.

Knocked-down flat, a 53-foot dry van carries 200 to 400 or more depending on wall count. Assembled on pallets it carries 20 to 22, one per floor position, because a filled box bulges past its pallet and needs clearance. Corrugated is not a food-contact surface, so buyers holding food, feed, or pharmaceutical product line a clean Grade A box with food-grade history with a food-grade poly liner sized to the box, 48" x 40" x 36" for a standard gaylord.
